QAGGIAVUUT ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING TO ELECT THE 2016-17 BOARD OF DIRECTORS

September 8, 2016– IQALUIT (Canada) –Qaggiavuut, a non-profit society dedicated to strengthening the Nunavut performing arts through training and advocacy will hold its Annual General Meeting in Iqaluit on September 21, 2016 at the Nunavut Research Institute starting at 7:30 p.m.

The Qaggiavuut Society is led by a 9-member board of directors and spearheads the award- winning Qaggiq Project, a strategy to create training and economic opportunities for Arctic performing artists.

Qaggiavuut has, since its creation in 2010, advocated for a Nunavut Performing Arts and Cultural Centre. Nunavut, which celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2019, is the only province or territory in Canada that does not have a professional performing arts space.

Some of the recent projects undertaken by Qaggiavut include development and delivery of Performing Arts Teacher Training workshops, filming of ‘master classes’ of Inuit traditional performance and launching a new website with electronic artist profiles. Qaggiavuut is planning advanced training in acting, music, drum dance and creative writing for performing artists throughout the upcoming year.
