Youth Music Workshops Bring Professional Recording Skills to Pond Inlet
Qaggiavuut hosts hands-on music production training for youth with Tev Sound, March 2–4 at Nasivvik High School
Iqaluit, NU
From March 2–4, 2026, Qaggiavuut Nunavut Performing Arts Centre will host a three-day music production workshop series in Pond Inlet, led by Ottawa-based producer and Algonquin College music professor Tev Burke of Tev Sound. The workshops will take place daily from 3:00–6:00 pm at Nasivvik High School.
Designed primarily for youth and emerging artists ages 15–35, the workshops will introduce core principles of music production, recording, and beat-making using accessible tools such as laptops and phones. With a cap of 10 participants, the program emphasizes practical skills and creative confidence that students can carry forward into their own music-making.
Alongside the workshops, Qaggiavuut is also collecting and digitizing traditional Inuit audio recordings, including pisiit, ajaaja songs, and oral stories. These recordings will be preserved in a public media archive to support long-term cultural preservation and access.
Tev Burke is a renowned music producer, sound engineer, and educator based in Ottawa. The founder of Tev Sound, he has over a decade of experience working with artists across Canada and internationally, and has taught music production at Algonquin College. His approach blends modern and traditional techniques, with a strong focus on mentorship and skill-building.
The Pond Inlet workshops are part of Qaggiavuut’s ongoing work to support Inuit youth through accessible, community-based arts training while preserving traditional knowledge for future generations.
Youth interested in participating can sign up at tinyurl.com/pond-music or email contact@qaggiavuut.com. Community members with traditional audio recordings they wish to contribute to the archive are also encouraged to get in touch.
